Micro Four Thirds in Joo Chiat / Katong, Singapore

Singapore is a small country, but there are many areas dedicated to the different cultures.

The Joo Chiat / Katong area is conserved as a Peranakan area. The Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese or Indian immigrants who married indigenous people from the Malay Archipelago in the 15th century.

The buildings here date from the 1920s, and used to be inhabited by English-educated middle class, including Peranakans and Eurasians. They have ornate facades, with intricate motifs and ceramic tiles.

These single-storey terrace houses used to be by the beach and were built on raised ground to protect them against rising tides:

As a bonus, you could spot quite a few interesting murals related to the businesses usually drawn with the Peranakan culture in mind:

Certainly worth a photo trip!
